Like most of the campers yesterday, I arrived to SuperCamp LMU Junior Forum wide-eyed and a bit bewildered. I didn’t know what to pack, where to go or what to do. I was tired when I got here and dreaded being away from home for the whole week. It was my first sleep-away educational summer camp!

Yesterday afternoon I started catching the SuperCamp fever and felt reinvigorated by all the energy, funny campers, and truly amazing Facilitators. I felt way more comfortable just knowing they were in charge and had everything handled.

I knew if I could just go with the flow I would be in good hands. A hearty dinner didn’t hurt either!

The LMU campus is B-E-A-utiful. Walking through campus was inspiring in and of itself. It lends an old-world feel with its breath-taking Sacred Heart Chapel, Sunken Gardens and Jesuit Community, yet it boasts state-of-the-art classrooms, restaurant-quality dining and inspiring views and architecture. The lawns are manicured, the dorms roomy and clean and the campus quiet and safe-feeling.

There are campers from all walks of life here and it is really nice to see them all getting along, being friendly and inclusive, learning and growing from each other. Before I came to SuperCamp, I was told that the best description for it is “organized chaos” and now I totally get it. We started right out learning a memory strategy without even realizing it! We were listening to a very entertaining story told to some of our favorite songs and before I knew it, I’d learned the first eight U.S. presidents in order! Say what?! SO COOL! This is awesome college prep!

Yesterday afternoon I was eagerly anticipating lights out but, by the time it arrived, I was wide-awake and looking forward to the morning. The Facilitators were so high-energy all day long, I couldn’t believe they could keep going at this pace all week but now I’m seeing how the energy builds upon itself and am feeling all sorts of excited to keep going.

SuperCamp is an incredible summer academic enrichment program.

Maximize your brain power during SuperCamp’s academic enrichment summer programs.

By Daniel Shedd

Brains love breaks! A recent Carnegie Mellon study found that taking breaks improves a brain’s decision-making capacity. Scientists watched the brain patterns of people while they took in information about cars and other topics. Then the subjects worked on an unrelated, distracting number game for a few minutes, after which they were asked to make decisions based on what they’d learned before the short break.

The researchers saw that important parts of the brain related to decision-making (visual, prefrontal cortices) stayed active even during the break. Their brains were actively, though subconsciously, processing and sorting data even while their focus stayed on the distraction activity. Consequently, the subjects who played the number game between getting the information and applying it made better decisions than those who did not take a break.

In other words, while we’re giving our conscious mind a break from all the things we’re learning, our subconscious continues to process information. So, next time you’re working on homework, you can use short breaks and your brain’s ability to process subconsciously to make your life easier! Be sure to take a ten-minute break every hour or so to give your brain time to process and rest. While you focus on conquering a video game or enjoying a great sandwich, perhaps your subconscious will solve the problem for you!

At SuperCamp, we take frequent breaks throughout the day so that our brains can rest and process the information we’ve been gaining all day. We journal in the evenings for the same reason – so that our brains can process and reprocess all the experiences and concepts of the day. SuperCamp is an educational summer camp where we learn dozens of college prep study techniques just like this one to make learning a much more natural, engaging and enjoyable experience. You will also gain leadership, interpersonal and communication skills during this fun summer enrichment program.

Sedrick Keyes, Facilitator in Training, welcomes students to SuperCamp.

We enjoyed a 2-hour demonstration of SuperCamp in action today as this year’s Facilitators practiced teaching in front of local middle and high school students to give real-time feedback.

Sam, a local high school student, was the most out-going kid in the room, shouting out answers, jumping out of his chair and over the table to volunteer to pass out materials, leading the team share and bringing an energy to learning that most teachers usually only dream of.

It wasn’t until the end of the session, when his high school teacher made the comment that this was the most he’d heard Sam say all year, that we understood the profound impact these SuperCamp strategies had in changing Sam’s life.

Allison Logue and Katie Fierro, SuperCamp Facilitators, hone their skills for the 2013 summer camp season.

His progress in just two hours is a testament to the SuperCamp Facilitators and Quantum Learning methods. Sam demonstrated in just two hours what an astounding difference this 10-day academic summer camp can create in a child’s life and how impactful positive energy is in supporting learning.

We eagerly anticipate the coming summer months when SuperCamps will commence at universities throughout the U.S. and we will enjoy similar experiences with hundreds of teens just like Sam. We are excited to share these life-changing methods to help your child reach their potential.

Dana Comiskey, SuperCamp Lead Facilitator, teaches Quantum Learning methods.
