Every year, parents are faced with the same question: how to give their kids a fun summer while providing them with a unique learning experience that will last. More and more families are turning to academic summer camps as a way of adding value to the summer camp experience.

But not all academic summer camps are created equal. Here are some points to consider when evaluating summer programs for your son or daughter.

Does the area of enrichment have any practical application to your child’s academic future?

Several camps position themselves as “academic” when in reality they are more like vacations for the students who attend. Do the kids like these camps? You bet. But before signing up, make sure the students aren’t just left to their own devices to “learn”! Find out about the learning experiences they’ll have that will give some depth to their summer—in addition to fun. Close inspection may reveal that there’s far more downtime and unstructured free time than there is quality enrichment.

What kind of training and expertise does the staff possess?

If a summer program bills itself as providing new skills to participants, then make a point to learn about the background of the staff who will teach these skills. Are the program leaders teachers themselves or experts in a particular field? Also, inquire about the training they receive. Many summer programs scramble at the last minute to hire summer staff and, as a result, the experience and training of some staff members may be lacking.

Is there a balance between learning and fun?

The last thing a student needs in summer is more school. A good academic summer camp gives students the feeling that they’re at camp, not back at school. While some programs try to combine learning and fun by giving the campers adequate free time, the best camps incorporate fun right into the learning. When a student enjoys the learning process, the brain does a better job of assimilating and retaining the new information.

In what ways will the program enrich your child’s life?

When most people hear “academic summer camp,” they think of academic enrichment. Clearly, students benefit from acquiring new skills in such areas as creative writing, reading comprehension, problem solving, and critical thinking. But if a camp offers them growth in life skills areas that build their confidence, motivation, and self-esteem, as well as their communication and leadership skills, then you’ve found an academic summer camp that can help a student grow in school and in life.

How long is the academic summer camp?

There is no set length that is best. Students do benefit from some downtime in the summer, so a program that runs three or more weeks may be too long. On the other hand, camps that last just a few days will have limited value. Similarly, day camps don’t have the same impact as residential enrichment camps, where students get to stay on site for the duration of the program. Some of the best learning can come in the evening sessions of summer programs.

Where is the academic summer camp held?

Look for enrichment camps held on college campuses. Middle school and high school students enjoy the experience of living in college dorms for a week or more. It can even prove to be inspirational as they begin to think about college.

The most important question—have you enrolled yet?

Sending your son or daughter to the right academic summer camp can pay long-term dividends for the entire family. Newly acquired academic skills, increased motivation, or added confidence can translate into better grades, as well as new academic and personal interests. In turn, this growth can lead to admission into better colleges, college scholarships, and rewarding careers.

It’s no coincidence that SuperCamp delivers in all six areas. We’ve designed every aspect of our program to draw your student into an experience of learning like no other. Our students have a blast, but they also learn valuable academic and social skills that they use for the rest of their lives.

Then only in its third year, the summer camp’s impact was strong and Matthew was changed by his experience that summer.

Matthew recalls … ”SuperCamp challenged me, pushing me into areas that were previously way out of my comfort zone. It totally changed my perception of what I could accomplish!”

Thirty years later, the family’s connection to SuperCamp remains strong.

Now a busy sales manager for a large company, Matthew still uses the skills he learned at summer camp so many years ago—and his children are now acquiring those same skills and more.

In 2013 Matthew’s parents, Dan and Mary, sent his children, Payton (PJ) and Ryan, to SuperCamp’s Senior Forum at Stanford University. Like their dad, they returned from their summer camp experience forever changed.

“When PJ came home, she was a different kid,” says her grandmother. “She’s always been talented but never believed in herself. Now she’s a self-confident young lady. And Ryan had all sorts of wonderful stories about his summer camp experience—it made a big impression on him. SuperCamp introduced both of them to wonderful parts of themselves that they didn’t know were there.”

Matthew has also seen changes in his children. “The first thing PJ did after summer camp was apologize for being a turkey,” says Matthew. “It broke through her teenage rebellion and helped her to realize we’re there to love and support her. She’s more humble and has a better idea of who she wants to be. Before SuperCamp she didn’t want to try out for the golf team. After SuperCamp she tried out and made the team—and now she’s undefeated! She used to wilt under pressure—now she wants to compete, and performs well!”

PJ and Ryan’s grandfather adds, “SuperCamp pushes teenagers out of their comfort zones—and shows them that they can accomplish much more than they ever thought. I’m a fan of SuperCamp because of the positive attitudes the kids come away with, their increased self-confidence, and what I perceive to be their change in focus.”

These changes came in spite of the fact that Ryan and PJ initially resisted the idea of going to an academic summer camp. It took two days at Stanford for them to fully dive in, but both students now consider SuperCamp the best experience of their lives.

Dan and Mary have enrolled PJ in Leadership Track at Stanford this summer. They’re also sending two more grandchildren, a niece, and a nephew to SuperCamp’s Senior Forum at Stanford and three grandchildren to SuperCamp’s Junior Forum at Loyola Marymount University. This makes a grand total of eight McSweeney kids attending SuperCamp 2014!

“We want to make sure they all have every opportunity to succeed in life,” said Dan. “To do that we’re sending these kids to SuperCamp, we send them to private high schools, and to four-year colleges, too. We’re very strong proponents of education because we think it gives kids the greatest opportunity for success in life. It certainly has been the case for our family.”

Give your children or grandchildren the gift of confidence this summer. Inner happiness and fulfillment come when your mind, body, and emotions are nurtured by the choices you make.

It’s the classic story about balance—one you may have run across before:

An American tourist traveled to a Mexican fishing village.

One day, the tourist noticed a fisherman unloading several tuna from his skiff. The tourist complimented the fisherman on his glistening catch, asking how long it took him to catch the fish.

“Only a little while,” replied the fisherman. “All I need is a few fish to support my family.”

The tourist looked baffled. “But what do you do with the rest of your time?”

The fisherman shrugged, “I sleep in every day, play with my grandkids, take a siesta, and spend time with my wife. In the evenings, I go out drinking and singing with my friends. I have a full life.”

The tourist scoffed, “I have an MBA from Harvard, and I can help you. You should spend more time catching fish. With the extra money, you can buy a bigger boat.”

“And after that?”

“With the extra money from the bigger boat, you can buy two or three boats and eventually hire more people to operate a fleet of fishing trawlers. Instead of selling your fish to a middle man, you can start to negotiate directly with the processing plants. After a while you would be able to open your own plant. Then you could leave this little village for Mexico City and eventually, New York! From there you could operate the whole enterprise.”

“And after that?”

“Well my friend, that’s when the fun starts,” explained the tourist, “When the business gets really big, you can sell stock in the company and make millions!”

“Wow, millions. What happens after that?” asked the fisherman.

“Then you can retire to a small Mexican fishing village, where you can sleep in every day, fish a little, play with your grandkids, take a siesta, and spend time with you wife. In the evenings you can go out drinking and singing with your friends.”

The fisherman just shrugged his shoulders and walked away.

The fisherman is the hero of this story. He throws conventional wisdom about wealth and success to the wind in exchange for a simple, leisurely life with plenty of time to play.

But is that what a balanced life really looks like?

In the 8 Keys of Excellence framework, balance is about identifying your values and making choices that honor those values, your own well-being, and the well-being of others. It means saying “no” to certain opportunities so you can say “yes” to others.

Balance is also about being flexible. Balance makes room for the natural ebb and flow of life. For example, you may have to skip your workout session one week to finish an important work project. But maybe the next week your work load is lighter and you have time to squeeze in an extra cardio session.

That’s why it’s so hard to nail down exactly what a balanced life looks like. We’re all going to make different choices based on our unique values, and even within our individual lives, priorities are going to vary from day to day and year to year.

Perhaps the takeaway is not that we all need to give up our career ambitions and go live on a beach in Mexico. But rather that we need to clarify our values and honor them in the lives we create.

For some of us, honoring our values will lead us to something akin to the fisherman’s life. But for others, we may find ourselves living the life of the American tourist. Whatever our values are, let’s make Balance one of them.

That’s essentially what Rachel Canning, an 18-year-old honor student, alleged in a lawsuit she filed last month against her parents.

Mr. and Mrs. Canning committed the grotesque error of setting a curfew and counseling their daughter to break up with her sketchy boyfriend. Rachel retaliated by suing them for child support—$650 a month to be exact.

The suit was dropped two weeks later, and Rachel is living with her parents again.

Of course, in your home a teenager seeking independence is anything but breaking news. You may be dealing with this kind of drama every day, although without the attorneys and press coverage.

However, raising teenagers doesn’t have to be “like nailing Jell-O to the wall,” as the saying goes.

Over the past 30 years, we’ve worked with more than 70,000 students at SuperCamp. We’ve seen it all, and we’ve learned a lot—including the fact that a little positive communication goes a long way.

It’s hard not to get stuck in the same negative communication patterns, especially when your teenager is refusing to see things from any other angle besides their own. But enlist these tips from Bobbi DePorter next time you face an impasse or an argument, and you may very well shift the conversation for the better and improve communication overall:

Know your teen’s “likes.” At SuperCamp, we often say “theirs to ours and ours to theirs.” That is, in order for you to establish trust and connection, you must first build an authentic bridge into your child’s world. Find out what kind of music your teens like, who they admire, and what they enjoy reading. Even better, listen to your teen’s favorite music together!

Use positive language. “Remember your jacket” is more effective than “Don’t forget your jacket.” If someone tells us not to do something, we naturally want to do it. Framing your directions in a positive light bypasses this inclination.

Hold back on unwanted advice. How many times has your spouse tried to fix a problem when all you wanted was a listening ear? Unwanted advice immediately shuts down the conversation. Listen first, and then ask how you can help.

Be silly, playful, and crazy. Our SuperCamp grads form amazingly strong, often lifelong friendships with each other. Why? Because nothing bonds two people like fun. Schedule a family outing once a month, go on vacation together, and share inside jokes. You’ll be amazed at how emotional walls crumble when you’re laughing and playing together.

Lend an ear. The simplest way to connect with your teen is to listen. We often sabotage conversations by being too quick to give feedback or with body language that communicates we aren’t fully present. Take your teen out to dinner and really pay attention to what your child has to say.

Experiment with OTFD. It stands for “Observations, Thoughts, Feelings, and Desires.” When feelings are hurt, most of us resort to one of two behaviors—stuffing our emotions or exploding at the person who hurt us. OTFD gives us an alternative by helping us to express our observations, thoughts, feelings, and desires, which usually diffuses the situation and leads to a peaceful resolution.

Practice the 4-Part Apology. We all mess up sometimes. Take ownership of your mistakes—and encourage your teen to do the same—with the 4-Part Apology. An honest apology goes a long way to repair trust.

OTFD and the 4-Part Apology are examples of the communication strategies we teach at SuperCamp. It’s no surprise, then, that 77% of SuperCamp grads report an improvement in their family relationships. We even have a special parent session at the end of the camp, so you can reinforce your teen’s newfound skills at home.

I always get the gardening bug in February. It hits like clockwork every year. We enjoy a week or two of spring-like weather here in Southern California, and I find myself irresistibly drawn to the local nursery.

This year went down like every other—at the nursery, I piled a wheelbarrow full of bulbs, mint, bell peppers, bok choy, and lettuce into my car. Once home, I carefully transplanted each seedling into our raised bed, watered the soil, and waited for the magic to happen.

Prep Classes Aren’t Enough, Even for Students Who Know Their Stuff

If you’re familiar with gardening, you know that even the strongest specimens won’t take root if the soil doesn’t have the right mix of nutrients. What starts out healthy will either wither or fail to thrive. The promised harvest won’t arrive without adequate support.

The same is true when it comes to SAT and ACT prep classes. You can purchase the very best package, but if the “soil” of your child’s mind isn’t properly cultivated, the information isn’t going to take root. Day-to-day concerns will crowd out vocabulary definitions and math formulas. Worse still, your child may panic in a critical moment and forget well-learned material.

SuperCamp—Like Fertilizer for Your Child’s SAT and ACT Study Plan

At SuperCamp, our SAT and ACT preview session gives students an idea of what to expect from the two tests, including the new SAT. But the entire SuperCamp experience is actually invaluable preparation for the standardized exams. Over the 10-day program, students develop critical skills such as time management and how to read faster and with greater comprehension. They also learn how to easily recall information and manage test-taking anxiety.

As a result, when SuperCamp grads take an SAT and ACT prep class, the information actually takes permanent root in their brains. And when they find themselves taking the real test, they have the benefit of not only the standard prep material, but also of all the knowledge and mental tools that they developed at SuperCamp.

The SAT and ACT Will Be Here Soon—Is Your Child Ready?

Now we’re well into March, and my garden is more robust than ever. I’m starting to harvest the herbs—which are threatening to overgrow the box—and the bell peppers are in full bloom. Fertilizing the soil early and often made all the difference.

March also means your junior in high school only has six months left to prepare for the SAT or ACT. If you have a freshman or a sophomore, it’s equally important that they are exposed to an experience like SuperCamp; everything they learn over the next year or two will determine their success on the exams. What are you doing between now and this fall to cultivate your child’s mind?

It doesn’t make sense to invest in expensive SAT or ACT prep classes if the material doesn’t stick. Give your child the rich mental soil he or she needs with SuperCamp. You can find out more by downloading a free copy of our special report, Why Most Students Aren’t Prepared for College, or by calling us at 800.228.5327.

Better test scores…

A higher GPA…

These are probably the first things that come to mind when you think about academic summer camp.

But did you know that your child can receive elective credit for his or her participation? Or that your summer camp fees can count towards college tuition?

These are just a few of the hidden perks of sending your son or daughter to an academic camp this summer.

Spice Up Your Transcripts with an Elective Credit

When your child completes an accredited summer camp program, he or she may be eligible for high school credit.

This credit typically counts towards your child’s high school elective requirements. Some private schools place limits on this; they’ll put the camp on your child’s transcripts, but they may not count it towards overall school credits.

Having an academic camp on your child’s transcripts may also help them get into college. In today’s competitive admissions process, you need to do everything you can to stand out. An academic summer program signals that your son or daughter has a good chance of excelling as an undergraduate student.

Unlike some summer camps, SuperCamp’s 10-day Senior Forum program qualifies for one elective credit through AdvancED—and for good reason. The 90-hour program teaches students learning techniques such as note taking and how to read with greater speed and comprehension. Students also develop critical life skills and problem-solving strategies.

Save Money for College

Considering a private college for your child? SAGE Tuition Rewards often flies under the radar, but it can really stretch the value of your summer camp fees.

For every dollar you spend on a participating summer camp (up to $2,500 per year per student), your child will receive one dollar in tuition credit, redeemable at more than 310 private colleges and universities. This program is completely free; all you have to do is sign up online. Unused credit can even be transferred to siblings.

Rather than simply paying for a single summer camp experience, make every dollar count with SAGE Tuition Rewards. SuperCamp offers this unusual perk to all of its students, provided that you sign up prior to the start of your child’s junior year. It’s just one more reason to choose us this summer.

Bring Out the Natural Leader in Your Child

Whether your child is shy and reserved or bold and confident, there’s always room to develop communication and relationship skills.

For teens who struggle in these areas, summer camp can be a game changer. Summer camps draw students out of their comfort zones by placing them in a fresh yet supportive environment. Students are challenged to build new friendships and express themselves—an experience that translates into better relationships and stronger communication skills once they return home.

While enhanced social skills are a side benefit of most summer camps, SuperCamp is unique in its emphasis on building social and emotional skills. We require all students to set aside their smartphones and other devices, so that they can focus on real world interactions. We also teach basic life skills that build confidence and connection, such as how to give a 4-Part Apology.

It doesn’t stop there. For return grads, SuperCamp also offers an advanced leadership program, known as Leadership Forum. Imagine the possibility of your child attending a summer program focused solely on leadership!

The Benefits are Unlimited—Spring Savings Are Not

These are only a few of the perks of sending your child to SuperCamp. To find out more, we invite you to contact us directly at 800.228.5327, or register online. We offer a $100 discount if you enroll by April 15, so don’t hesitate to get in touch.

As we all know, reading is a valuable skill that your child will use throughout life. In middle school and high school, students are expected to complete reading assignments both in and outside of school. College-bound students should prepare themselves for two hours of studying for every one hour of class time. It is imperative that your student can absorb large amounts of content with increased speed and comprehension. Last summer at SuperCamp, your child learned Quantum Reading, which uses a combination of enhanced interest, highly focused concentration and specific reading strategies to increase speed and comprehension.

There are 5 steps to becoming a successful Quantum Reader:

Prepare: Prepare your Attitudes, Beliefs and Commitment (ABCs). It’s also important to create a positive learning environment for yourself. Claim a study space of your own—a quiet one, if possible. Use furniture that fits your style, and ensure that you have proper lighting. Your space should be well lit without hurting the eyes.

Get Into State: …alpha state, that is. Close your eyes, breathe deeply and imagine a peaceful place. Look up, look down, open your eyes, and wa-la! You’re in alpha state. Alpha state is a state of relaxed concentration. You’re calm and alert, absorbing material and making connections. Baroque music can help put your brain into alpha state—try Bach, Handel or Vivaldi.

SuperScan: Spend 2-3 seconds per page skimming content. Quickly expose your eyes and brain to every page. Move fast!

Read: Return to the beginning and read the content. A visual guide, such as running your finger along the words on the page, keeps your eyes from skipping around. In fact, using a visual guide can double your reading speed! Our brains are able to take in entire sentences at a time (not just one word at a time), so allow your eyes to flow quickly over them and your brain will actually register it all.

Review: Within 5 minutes, review what you’ve just read so that it sticks. You can do this by mind-mapping, writing out notes or telling yourself or someone else what you’ve read.

Review the Quantum Reading procedure with your student, and ensure that they are using these strategies in school.

You’re working on a science project, and the cotton ball cloud parts simply will not stick to the cardboard. You glue, let it dry, it falls out. You glue, let it dry, it falls out. After a while, it would seem a bit crazy to just keep using the same glue when you’re getting the same results, right? This is where flexibility comes in.

The key of flexibility is about maintaining the ability to change what you’re doing in order to get the outcome you desire. If your current strategy isn’t working, try something different! Keep trying until you find what works.

In our everyday situations, we need to look at our actions to see whether we are being rigid or flexible. If a set of actions repeatedly fails to help us reach our goal, then it’s time to change our strategy.

It’s not always easy to recognize or admit that we’re doing something that just isn’t working. The first step to being flexible is admitting that something needs to change. Remove your ego from your actions and take an objective look at what you’re doing. See your failure as feedback, use that valuable information to make adjustments, and move on! By exploring numerous potential solutions, you’ll discover avenues for success that you never would have previously considered.

How have you used the key of flexibility? We’d love to hear from you in the comments section. Click “leave a reply” at the top of this page!

We hate to break it to you, but summer is only four months away! Spring break is actually just around the corner, and Christmas is now nearly two months in the past. Here are just a few reasons to start thinking about your child’s summer plans sooner rather than later

1. Reserve your spot

According to the American Camp Association (ACA), more than 11 million children attend 12,000 camps in the United States every year. That’s a lot of kids going to a lot of camps, but don’t be fooled by the big numbers. Registration for many camps begins at the beginning of the school year—yes, we’re talking waaaay back in September—and you don’t want to be stuck on a waiting list with your summer plans up in the air. While some camps don’t fill up until late spring, many will have specific programs, dates or locations that sell out early. In the case of SuperCamp, for instance, our Stanford location is typically the first to fill, with less than half of the seats remaining at the time of this writing. Specialized summer programs (such as Quantum U for us) also tend to fill up before other sessions.

2. Save money

This is a big one—so big, in fact, that it can be broken down in three different ways:

a. Early bird savings: many summer programs encourage early enrollment with discounts, and these discounts can vary throughout the fall from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars. In the case of SuperCamp, we are currently offering a $100 discount for all of those that enroll before April 15, 2014 and an additional $100 discount for returning SuperCamp graduates. Many camps offer these sorts of early bird discounts, from 5-10% off tuition to free merchandise if you enroll or apply earlier.

b. Airline discounts: For those summer programs that are held not-so-close to home, enrolling early can make a HUGE difference in airfare costs. Quite simply, the sooner you reserve your spot at camp, the sooner you can book that flight—and we all know that booking early can save you hundreds of dollars.

c. Monthly payments: Many summer programs (such as SuperCamp) offer a monthly payment option, so that you can pay for camp in installments instead of writing one big check. The sooner you sign up, the smaller these installments will be!

3. Hit up camp fairs

If you’re new to the camp scene, consider going to camp fairs to learn more about summer programs that take place both in your area and around the world. They usually start around February (wait—that’s NOW!) and run until April or May. If you’re not new to the summer camp scene, you know that it’s easy to become overwhelmed by the number of choices out there. Camp fairs can help! You and your children can speak with representatives from different camps to learn more about their programs. Often held in schools, camp fairs are usually open to the public and are generally free to attend. For SuperCamp, we explore camp fairs out west, in Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the Bay area. The ACA posts a list of camp fairs across the country on their website.

4. Ease of mind

The number of day camps has increased by 69% and resident camps have increased by 21% since 2002. In other words, you have OPTIONS. The longer you wait, the more options you’re going to stumble across, so do your research now! Make a list of what you’re looking for in a summer camp experience for your child, and find out which camps can fulfill your needs. As the school year progresses, you’re only going to get busier, planning for spring break and end-of-year activities such as banquets, graduations, sports tournaments and the like. Most camps require paperwork, including a health history form signed by a doctor. For SuperCamp, we also require academic recommendations from teachers. Planning ahead allows you to schedule any required appointments, complete the necessary forms and give teachers plenty of time to write up a stellar recommendation for your child. Finally, by making your summer plans now, you’ll be able to truly prepare for your child’s camp experience—explore the camp website and youtube channel, engage with them on social media, learn more about staff and print off a packing list so that you have everything you need well ahead of time.

Well….what are you waiting for?! Get planning.

The final early enrollment discount for SuperCamp ends on April 15, 2014. For this and the reasons listed above, don’t wait any longer! Register now or call an enrollment counselor on 800-285-3276, extension 200.

With less than half of Illinois ACT test-takers meeting three or more college-readiness benchmarks in English, reading, science and math, summer programs can give many students the extra boost they need to be ready for college and beyond.

CHICAGO, – Only 46% of high school students are prepared to face the rigorous demands of college, according to the Illinois State Board of Education. Summer enrichment programs are one way that parents are helping their teens prepare better, focusing on academics, social and communication skills.

SuperCamp, an academic, life and career skills camp, is holding programs this summer to help teens improve grades, confidence and motivation. “It’s about helping students discover that learning can be fun, which leads to intrinsic motivation,” says President Bobbi DePorter. “More students are applying to top colleges than ever before. They need to know how they learn best and gain powerful strategies that help them excel. ”

Even top-performing students may find themselves unprepared. Many students with academic talent coast through middle and high school, earning A’s with little to no effort, says DePorter. When they go to college and find work that challenges them, their work ethic and study habits often aren’t sufficient to succeed.

Researchers from the CRIS initiative argue that college readiness extends far beyond academic success. Determining success rates among students, they insist, requires new and different ways to measure college readiness that extend beyond test scores and grades. 40% of high school students are chronically disengaged from school, and confidence and motivation are often overlooked.

Craig McKenna, a SuperCamp graduate from Hinsdale, says that he left the program feeling better about his relationships and better about himself. “I met some incredible people who pushed me to a level I never thought existed in me,” he says. “If you want to learn how to succeed in life, this is the place to be.”
